“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’” (1)
King David had a yearning to make a holy dwelling place for God. He was able to complete the preparations for building the temple for God – a permanent home for the ark of the covenant of the Lord – but he was forbidden to actually build the temple himself. “But God said to me, you shall not build a house for My name because you are a man of war and have shed blood.” (2) Instead, God chose Solomon, David’s son, to build the temple. Although I am sure David was sorely disappointed, he willingly submitted to God. Then, as any loving father would do, he left his son instructions to heed. First, David revealed that God is to be trusted: “…the Lord has made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern. Be strong and courageous, and act: do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.” (3) David reminded his son that God gave him the ability to design the temple, and that God would also be with him to bring it to completion. The Lord would never fail him. He needed only to stay focused in completing the work. David also wanted to leave his son with the importance of an intimate relationship with God.
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.” (4) The father’s heart’s cry was urgent! It is as if David said, “Listen son, this relationship with God is vitally important.”The father’s groaning came from within, longing to tell his son the most precious words he felt he needed to come to understand, words which are essential to life. Truly follow God and keep your heart and mind pure before the Lord. He watches and sees the heart and evaluates if the heart is wholly His. The father leaves his son with the most important confirmation, “If you seek God, you will find Him.” (See also Jeremiah 29:13, 14) Then by contrast he leaves a serious warning, ”If you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.”
I encourage you to heed these personal words: A relationship with God is vital! God will never fail you; therefore you need not be fearful. The more you come to understand Him and His ways, the more you will be encouraged to understand how much He loves you. Is there is anything more important than the words of life David left to his son? This life is perishing quickly. I urge you to diligently pray over these Scriptures and walk closely with the Lord. He is your DWELLING place. Receiving the gift of salvation through Jesus, and welcoming Him inside will allow Him to dwell in you forevermore. Let’s get down on our knees with thankful hearts to express our love and gratitude.
Precious Savior, I want to know You more. I want to know Your everlasting name. Lord, let me not get distracted or swayed by the cares of this life but hold me in Your arms of love as I surrender to You. Amen
